Baie Nettlé / Nettle Bay visitor guide: lagoon vs ocean, beaches, and orientation

Baie Nettlé (English: Nettle Bay) is a narrow coastal strip on the French side of Saint-Martin, connecting the Terres Basses area toward Marigot, the island’s French capital. Its geography is unusual: the same spit separates the Caribbean Sea from Simpson Bay Lagoon (the large interior lagoon shared with the Dutch side), which creates two distinct beach experiences within minutes of each other.

Lagoon side: calm water, family-friendly swimming

Travel guides and local tourism sources commonly describe the lagoon shoreline as sheltered, with clear, gentler water that suits swimming, relaxed wading, and water sports that prefer flat conditions. If you are prioritizing an easy beach day—especially with children—the lagoon side is often the intuitive choice.

Ocean side: wind, views, and different activities

The seaward side can feel more exposed. Depending on conditions, you may find stronger breeze and a different texture underfoot (rockier sections are noted in several island guides). That exposure is part of why some visitors head here for kite-oriented sports and open-water scenery, while keeping lagoon time for swimming and lounging.

Where Le Côté Lagon fits

We are a lagoon-side restaurant in Baie Nettlé, built around daylight dining: seafood-forward plates, French Caribbean sensibility, and service paced for vacation time. If you are mapping a day that includes Marigot market mornings or an afternoon on Terres Basses, we are a natural lunch anchor before the sun softens.
